Mofo - De La Soul

Poucos artistas provocaram tanto frenesi em uma estréia como o De La Soul e seu álbum 3 Feet High and Rising, lançado em 1989. Mais do um dos mais importantes álbuns de hip-hop da história (ou até mesmo o maior), o De La Soul criou um som absolutamente inovador, levando o estilo a um novo caminho. Amparados no hit "Me Myself and I", o trio fez história e continua na ativa até hoje.

Formado por Posdnuos (Kelvin Mercer, nascido em 17 de agosto de 1969), Trugoy the Dove (David Jude Jolicoeur,nascido 21 de setembro de 1968), and Pasemaster Mase (Vincent Mason, nascido em 27 de março de 1970), o De La Soul se tornou em pouco tempo um fenômeno.

Desde o começo, o De La Soul chamou a atenção por suas colagens, bom humor e inteligência. Aliás, os nomes dos três refletem bem o espírito do trio: Posdnuos era o nome que Mercer tinha como DJ, lido de trás para frente: Sound-Sop; Trugoy também era uma brincadeira com a comida favorita de Jolicoeur, yougurt (iogurte).

Os três começaram juntos no ginásio, em Amityville, Nova York, e logo uma demo chamada Plug Tunin' caiu nas mãos de Prince Paul, líder e produtor do Stetsasonic, que ficou fascinado com o que ouvia, a ponto de conseguir um contrato com a Tommy Boy Records para o promissor trio.

Juntos, o quarteto produziu o inacreditável LP de estréia, 3 Feet High and Rising, lançado em março de 1989.

O grupo chamava a atenção por vários motivos: o primeiro é que ao invés de falar de violência, gangues e temas sociais, o grupo preferia falar de paz, amor e proclamava o nascimento do "D.A.I.S.Y. age" (Da Inner Sound, Y'all), ou também a "era das margaridas".

O grupo mostrava também um incrível conhecimento musical, sampleando diversos nomes diferentes, como os Turtles - que os processaram por usarem "You Showed Me" sem autorização -, Steely Dan, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, etc...

O disco explorava temas incomuns para os grupos de hip-hop, com muito bom humor e até beirando o nonsense. Em "Say Go No", Posdonous protesta contra as drogas. O título era uma referência à campanha liderada pela então primeira-dama Nancy Reagan "Just Say No". Apesar de detestar Reagan, Posdonous tinha perdido um irmão para o crack e se dizia refletido na campanha.

Apesar de vários compactos extraídos do disco, o grande sucesso veio com "Me Myself and I", primeiro lugar na parada R&B e 34º no total.

Além das letras, o De La Soul se aproximava muito do jazz e soul, além de liderar uma nova leva de grupos nova-iorquinos como o A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, the Jungle Brothers e Monie Love.

O disco causou furor recebendo prêmios de "disco do ano" em várias revistas pelo mundo todo. Os nova-iorquinos do Village Voice foram mais longe e elegeram o disco o "Sgt. Pepper's do hip hop."

Com tanto sucesso, o grupo demorou para soltar um segundo LP. A pressão era imensa e a expectativa ainda maior. Por isso, quando De La Soul is Dead saiu, houve uma certa decepção, o que era bastante compreensível.

Considerado um trabalho mais maduro e introspectivo e até mais sombrio, o disco teve até uma boa vendagem, chegando à 26ª posição nas paradas e com uma boa execução do compacto "Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)."

A capa trazia um vaso com margaridas mortas dizendo que "a era das margaridas estava morta". O disco falava de temas sociais sérios, como em "Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa", que relata a história de uma menina que não suporta mais ser abusada sexualmente pelo pai. A ingenuidade e a alegria havia ficado para trás.

O grupo se recolheu novamente aos estúdios e demorou outros dois anos para lançar um novo trabalho e saíram de lá com o moderno e conceituadíssimo Buhloone Mindstate.

O disco se aproxima mais do jazz e conta com a participação do saxofonista Maceo Parker, lendário músico que acompanhou James Brown por vários anos. O trio expande horizonte trabalhando com o trio japonês Scha Dara Parr em "Long Island Wildin'". O novo trabalho deixava longe a proposta alegre dos primeiros anos e, apesar das críticas positivas, o disco vendeu pouco. Ao que parece, o público queria o De La Soul do início.

Com o nome estabelecido no mercado, shows seguidos e convites para participarem de vários trabalhos, o De La Soul demorou três anos para soltar um novo CD.

E quando o fez era sem o velho parceiro Prince Paul. Stakes Is High mostra o grupo mais integrado e assinando também a produção. O problema é que as vendagens foram fracas e as críticas diversas.

Após isso, o trio continuou dando shows, participando de programas e gestando um ousado projeto: uma trilogia que falaria sobre Art Official Intelligence. O primeiro deles foi Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump, seguido de AOI Bionix. Produção luxuosa, idéia ousada e, infelizmente, abortada no meio, já que a terceira parte jamais saiu.

As vendagens continuavam baixas e o grupo estava insatisfeito com o resultado após quatro anos de trabalho duro e uma rotina incessante de shows pelo mundo.

Além disso, o trio começou a brigar com a Tommy Boy por causa de dinheiro. Para compensar sai uma coletânea, Timeless: The Singles Collection, que teve boa vendagem.

A gravadora reclamava das baixas vendagens e o grupo da má promoção de seu trabalho. A briga acabaria sendo feia e o grupo deixaria o selo, após uma confusão envolvendo a WEA e a Elektra.

Em 2004 é a vez de um novo trabalho, The Grind Date, pelo selo Sanctuary Urban, presidido pelo pai da cantora Beyonce, Matthew Knowles.

Embora não fosse a continuação da trilogia AOI, o grupo conseguiu boas vendagens e críticas.

Em 2005 ganharam um Grammy de melhor vocal pela colaboração com a Orquestra Sinfônica de Los Angeles em "Feel Good Inc". Ainda em 2005, Posdonous fez uma parceria com o DJ português de Cabo Verde Boss AC na faixa "Yo (Não Brinques Com Esta Merda"). Em 2006, lançaram uma coletânea chamada The Impossible: Mission TV Series - Pt. 1.
