Aos poucos vou pagando tributo aos grandes nomes que vão sendo adiados ou esquecidos nesse site. Faltam muitos, eu sei, mas sou apenas um e não com tanto tempo assim. Dessa maneira, é hora de falarmos um pouco desse sensacional cantor e compositor canadense, um dos mais importantes já surgidos. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere é seu segundo disco solo e um dos meus favoritos. Aqui estão contidos clássicos imortais como "Cinnamon Girl", "Cowgirl in the Sand", "Down by the River", "Round & Round (It Won't Be Long)" e a faixa-título. Um disco de poucas faixas, sete no total, longas, líricas e densas. Um clássico em todos os sentidos.

O cantor e compositor canadense Neil Young é um dos nomes mais importantes do rock desde que apareceu no início da década de 60.

Com seu jeito anasalado de cantar, suas composições melancólicas e pessoais e um jeito todo peculiar de tocar sua guitarra, sempre alta e com muita distorção, Neil marcou a história da música e é um músico extremamente influente, sendo um dos maiores ídolos de gente como os Pixies, Sonic Youth, Pearl Jam (com quem gravou um álbum) e tantos outros.

E Neil Young já era famoso quando resolveu tentar a carreira-solo como ex-membro do Buffalo Springfield.

Assim, assinou com a Reprise e, em 1968, estreou com um disco intitulado apenas Neil Young.

O disco trazia companhias ilustres nas faixas como o ex-companheiro de Buffalo, o baixista Jim Messina, além do guitarrista Ry Cooder e o do pianista Jack Nitzsche.

O disco foi produzido por Dale Batchelor e David Briggs, e foi lançado no dia em que o cantor completou 23 anos, em 12 de novembro de 1968, e não janeiro de 1969, como muitos consideram oficialmente.

Apesar de Neil Young admitir que não é um ótimo disco, permito-me discordar e posso citar, no mínimo, duas excelentes faixas: "The Loner" e a clássica "I've Been Waiting for You", canção que chegou a receber covers de Pixies e David Bowie, décadas depois.

Insatisfeito com o fato de trabalhar com músicos convidados e procurando uma maior identidade sonora, Neil foi atrás de músicos que pudessem ajudá-lo.

Neil acabou conhecido uma banda chamada The Rockets, um trio formado por Danny Whitten (guitarra), Billy Talbot (baixo) e Ralph Molina (bateria).

Acabou rebatizando o trio de Crazy Horses e juntos estabeleceram uma das mais prolíficas e perfeitas duplas que o rock já viu e ouviu: Neil Young & Crazy Horse.

Com o mesmo David Briggs como produtor, Neil e o Crazy Horse entraram em estúdio em 1969 para produzir o segundo disco-solo de Neil e um dos mais belos de seu longa carreira: Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.

O disco foi gravado em rápidas duas semanas e o cantor jura que duas das mais belas canções do disco - "Cowgirl in the Sand" e "Down by the River," foram escritas enquanto ele estava de cama, com febre alta (39,5 ºC). O disco ainda contaria com a delicada voz de Robin Lane em "Round & Round (It Won't Be Long) e o violino de Bobby Notkoff em "Running Dry".

O que dizer desse álbum com apenas sete músicas sendo que duas delas possuem mais de nove minutos - "Down by the River" e "Cowgirl in the Sand"? Pode-se dizer que foi nesse trabalho que Neil encontrou sua personalidade definitiva, personalidade essa que seria apenas burilada e aperfeiçoada ao longo dos anos.

O disco abre com uma das mais belas canções de todo seu catálogo, a curta "Cinnamon Girl". O disco segue com a faixa-título e cai depois na delicada e triste "Round & Round (It Won't Be Long)", com a voz de Robin Lane fazendo um lindo contraponto country.

A próxima canção, 'Down by the River", é talvez a letra mais densa de todo o disco. Segundo o próprio Young, conta a luta desesperada de um homem que tenta controlar seu lado escuro e sinistro e que mata sua amada. E no meio de tudo isso, um longo e lento solo de guitarra, enquanto a canção é executada de maneira soturna.

O disco teve uma boa acolhida pela crítica e público, alcançado a 34ª posição na parada, enquanto "Cinnamon Girl" ficou na 55ª posição entre os compactos.

Mas Neil Young não tinha muito tempo para pensar nisso, pois já estava tramando um novo projeto: nada mais do que o sensacional quarteto Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Isso sem se esquecer de sua carreira-solo que correria paralelamente até hoje.
