Eles são dois dos maiores nomes da música irlandesa de todos os tempos. Sempre foram grandes amigos e participaram de vários discos. Mas no final de 1987 resolveram fazer um com canções clássicas da Irlanda. E quem mais poderia fazer isso a não ser Van Morrison e os Chieftains, grupo liderado por Paddy Moloney? Se você pára no U2 o seu conhecimento de música irlandesa precisa ouvir esse cd que mostra o coração da Irlanda.

Van Morrison e Chieftains são ídolos de várias gerações de músicos. Basta conferir Long Black Veil, disco de 95 dos Chieftains em que participam os seguintes cantores: Sting, Rollling Stones, Van Morrison, Sinéad O'Connor, Mark Knopfler, Ry Cooder, Marianne Faithfull e Tom Jones.

A parceria com Van já é longa. Encontraram-se muitas vezes em shows e sempre tocavam músicas do folclore irlandês.Para esse disco sair foi necessário uma briga interminável entre a gravadora e os músicos.

"Eles achavam que um disco como esse não venderia nada, que seria um desperdício de tempo e de talento. Eu expliquei que a Irlanda não era só o U2, que tínhamos muito a oferecer, até para os adolescentes", conta Van.

Van brincava que esse era seu disco punk, porque tiveram que peitar a gravadora e até ameaçar de suspender o contrato. Quando chegaram a esse ponto, o selo acatou a vontade dos músicos e deixou-os em paz.

O disco começa com "Star of The County Down", música tradicional e que foi arranjada por Morrison e Moloney. "Nós queríamos ser o mais fiel possível ao clima da música. Eu sempre ouvi esse tipo de música quando garoto e sonhava em fazer um disco com o Van Morrison. Nosso trabalho já é ligado às raízes irlandesas, mas queríamos algo mais pessoal. Queríamos mostrar que a Irlanda produziu músicos excelentes, como os Dubliners, ou até mesmo nós", conta Paddy.

As músicas variavam de folclóricas ou canções de Van Morrison, escritas especialmente para o álbum.

"Tocar com os Chieftains sempre foi maravilhoso. Primeiro, pela humidade do grupo, a gentileza. Todos eles são extremamentes acessíveis e atenciosos. Eu participei de duas músicas do Long Black Veil e queria mais. É muito importante que pessoas como eles continuem na ativa e que produzam tanto assim. O Chieftains é um segredo muito bem guardado da Irlanda", disse Mick Jagger.

O disco é composto de dez músicas, sendo duas de Van Morrison.

"Trabalhar com os Chieftains foi muito curioso porque muitos jovens ouviram o álbum e adoraram. As vendas foram excelentes e todo artista novo queria trabalhar com eles. É incrível o que nós fizemos na Irlanda. Até hoje a gravadora espera um segundo trabalho nosso. E agora nós nos negamos só para irritar. Quem disse que não podemos ser punks aos 40 anos?", brinca Van.

A segunda canção é uma das duas únicas que Morrison escreveu especialmente, "Irish Heartbeat", que leva o nome do disco.

"Poderíamos produzir um monte de músicas, mas queríamos que a audiência mais jovem ouvisse um pouco das canções que fizeram parte da Irlanda de seus avós, da tradição, do folclore. Esse disco abriu muitas portas para que o público mais jovens nos conhecesse. Não éramos apenas a banda que seus pais ouviram. Nós estamos ligado com a Irlanda de hoje.

A banda arriscou mais e gravou uma canção em gaélico: "Tá Mo Chleamhnas Déanta", que contém partes em inglês também. Kevin Conneff canta a parte gaélica e Van em inglês. Sempre liderado por aquele que John Lee Hooker chamou de maior cantor do mundo, os Chieftains fizeram um trabalho primoroso.

O disco contém ainda as participações de Ciarán Braonáin, no baixo e Mary Black, Maura O 'Connell e June Joyce nos backings vocals.

É um daqueles discos que você coloca para ouvir e deixa tocar sem parar. Os Chieftains repetiram a idéia de chamar vocalistas em Tears of Stone, disco feito com várias cantoras.

Se você não conhece música irlandesa tente adquirir um exemplar. Não precisa ser dito que não foi lançado no Brasil, mas isso surpreende alguém nessa época?
